News, STARS, Keswick Residential and World Book Day – from John and the PHS Team! Friday 7th March 2025
Hi everyone
World Book Day was amazing here and there was loads happening all over the school. Please do read about some things below and get a book for 拢1! The literacy team have been fantastic, and everyone got into the spirit of it. It鈥檚 great to have these links with home regarding dressing up (or down!) and reading and all sorts like that
And before half term of course was our fabulous Keswick Residential. Have a look at just a few of the stories and photos below. It means such a lot to us to have this trip; we鈥檙e committed to Outdoor Learning throughout the school and this trip is like the culmination of it, for the oldest students we have. Thanks for supporting that too
There are loads of other things in this blog and our two others today too: Family Liaison, Online Safety, Pancake Day, Makaton, Stars of the Week, Awards and much much more. We鈥檙e over halfway through the year now and motoring on! All the best for a lovely weekend, and we hope to see you soon
All the best

Residential to Keswick
Let鈥檚 hear from Neil and what he was doing with Logan and Dom.
Logan has been working hard throughout the school year. On residential he completed a 5km bike ride. The skills and confidence he gained have now transferred to school where he took part in his first cycling session yesterday morning. His peers also provided support and encouragement.
Dominic has been developing a lot during physiotherapy sessions and throughout the school day. These skills translated well to residential where he was tasked with the practical task of lighting a fire and making hot chocolates for the rest of the group.
The dudes! Dom and Logan!
Now let鈥檚 see what Bex was up to!
The week away in the beautiful lake district gave students the opportunity to experience lots of different fun activities.
George loved his first time on a zip wire!
The students put into practice skills from bike sessions in school, they cycled 5km on adapted bikes around an old airfield, being very careful to dodge any sheep!
Flying high on the King鈥檚 swing!
We have 3 Super-Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through our curriculum. The Key Drivers are Communication, Wellbeing and Independence. The Groups are Literacy, Physical Development and Personal Development.
Literacy
Becky, our Literacy Lead, leads a team that improve all aspects of literacy, including this year a lot of handwriting and oracy (it鈥檚 OK, she鈥檒l be going into explain all of that) as well as reading, phonics, books and all sorts!
WORLD BOOK DAY!!!!!!!!!
Let鈥檚 Hear from Sarah and some other colleagues!
On Thursday it was World Book Day and this year the theme has been 鈥楻ead Your Way鈥. Throughout the week students have enjoyed book related events including online author/illustrator events as well as lots of book and reading themed activities including a book swap, designing book covers, book tokens and character plate creations!
Here are just a few photos from of our fantastic paper plate creations, some classes are completing the character plates today so watch out for them next week!
Can you guess our favourite books and characters?

Book Swap
Andy from the school Wellbeing team organised a book swap event which was a huge success, students enjoyed swapping their books for a new title to take home to enjoy!
World Book Day 拢1 Book Token
These can be used in a range of retailers: There are great book options for the 拢1 books this year, see link to what is available: . Tokens are valid until Sunday 23rd March 25
6LA took part in a lovely online session about Stories of Nature, through the British Library
Our students are massive fans of Michael Rosen. He told some really funny tales and gave us great ideas for stories. Everyone loved the stories read by Emily Grazebrook and Sandra Agard. Especially the dramatic ‘The Cailleach. The story of Brigid and how Spring became’
We took part in a draw-along and made some amazing illustrations with help from Allen Fatimaharan. Shannon even made up her own story about how penguins came to be black and white
A really enjoyable Monday morning.
Also, Eve was working with her class
For world book day in 2HR we shared our favourite stories while sat cosy in our pyjamas and blankets
We also took advantage of the sunshine and acted out the story of Room on the Broom outside. We had a great time!
Thanks 2HR
Happy Reading and Happy World Book Day!
Physical Development
Everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects. Steph oversees this and will ensure that an aspect is shared in the blog each week.
Dodgeball with Nathan!
Over the school year we ask for students鈥 feedback about the PE and sports we provide at 最新麻豆原创 School and overall, it鈥檚 been very positive
Interestingly several students have made requests about attentional sports they would like in Lunch Clubs – a top mention is Dodgeball, so this term we have added Dodgeball to the Lunch Clubs.
听
“Remember the 5 D’s of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge”
Personal Development
One of the best things about the school and one of the most important for our pupils, PD covers PSHE, Wellbeing, Careers, Social Moral Spiritual & Cultural, Online Safety, Behaviour and similar areas. Jo pulls it all together. Let鈥檚 see what Jo and the team have in store for us this week! The inspectors really loved all of the PD we do!
SMSC
2HL enjoyed learning about Shrove Tuesday. We listened to a poem all about pancakes and what Shrove Tuesday is. We then explored ingredients and pancake toppings using all of our senses. The students pressed a big mack to say when they wanted to “flip” the pancake and they used fine motor skills to grasp the pan handle to flip the pancake. The students communicated their likes and dislikes relating to the different textures, smells and tastes. Not many students liked the egg, but they all loved the chocolate spread!
This week in class 4OW we have been celebrating Shrove Tuesday! Students have experienced creating their own pancakes and experiencing new tastes and textures when picking their toppings.
As part of Pancake Day, students in 4OW investigated the traditions of different cultures. The students took part in a North Yorkshire tradition of 鈥楽kipping Day鈥. In this tradition, people go down to the seafront and skip along the shore as part as a race. To celebrate this, 4OW practiced their skipping skills on the yard to see who was the quickest!
This week, 4OW also celebrated World Book Day by decorating paper plates as a book or character of their choice. Students selected a wide range of genres and books from Jaws to James and the Giant Peach, and even the Dictionary!
Wellbeing
Here are Andy and the Wellbeing Team about what鈥檚 happening this year in their brilliant Connect Challenge series! Go Andy!
As part of World Book Day, our connect challenge was to “connect with reading” and we鈥檝e seen the magic that stories can bring to our school community this week. Key Stage 4 and Post 16 pupils bravely volunteered to visit Engagement classes, sharing their favourite books with younger students!
Shay delighted Beth’s class by reading “The Tiger Who Came to Tea,” engaging Jo-Jo in a fun-filled experience that ended with an imaginative re-enactment using the play kitchen!
Meanwhile, Casey visited Hannah Laidlaw’s class where she read 鈥淩oom on the Broom鈥 鈥 she did a fantastic job and had the students laughing! Meanwhile, Santi shared his favourite books with children in Hannah Fuller’s and Christian’s classes. These playful interactions showed the importance of reading and connection with others!
The Wellbeing Team held a book swap on Thursday afternoon, inviting pupils to trade in their pre-loved books for new ones. The book swap was popular across all departments with pupil鈥檚 queuing at the door and highlighted the importance of sharing stories and the joy they can bring to our lives.
Behaviour for Learning (BfL)
Let鈥檚 hear from Aylisha about all the exciting work this team are doing
This term, our main focus for behaviour for learning is to continue the systemization of BfL.听 We continue to work with partnership agencies such as CYPS and Childrens鈥 Services to support our students with their individual needs to ensure that they are accessing the curriculum and other school activities effectively
If you wish to contact the BfL team for any additional support and queries, please do not hesitate to. Aylisha and Corin would be pleased to talk
Exams with Kat!
Hello!
I hope all students are in good spirits and enjoying being back in school after the half term break, seeing their friends and learning new things at 最新麻豆原创 School every day
The exams entry deadline for qualifications that run on the GCSE annual summer cycle and NEA Coursework has now passed and all entries were submitted on time
Next steps after the entries now are
- Establish the room set ups 鈥 who can be accommodated with who in an exams room
- Access Arrangements
- Invigilator assignments for those entered
- Prepare for this summer series
- NEA Mark Submission deadline in May – there is plenty of paperwork to be completed, collated and to be checked before the submission of marks to the awarding bodies by mid may, prior to posting the paperwork off to the awarding bodies
Here is to a positive next term with Easter to look forward to soon听馃槉
Kind regards, Kat
Early Years 鈥 The Ducklings!
Let鈥檚 get the latest update from what鈥檚 been happening down in the fabulous Early Years
Welcome back to Early Years
We would like to invite you on our next adventure. So sit back and buckle up and get ready to 鈥淐OME OUTSIDE鈥!
This week we brought the outside in – the mini-beasts got stuck in the mud and we had to find ways to rescue them. We ventured out to the Outdoor Learning area to look for mini-beasts. The children enjoyed the story of 鈥渟uper worm鈥 and lots of lovely giggles as super worm pulled the ant from the well
On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday. We made pancakes on the tuff tray and mixed shaving foam in the pan. Some fantastic colour matching. We played in the sunshine and looked through the sunny box trying the sunglasses and hats on, played on the bikes, explored the sand and went to places on the train. Lots of fun in our soft play sessions, we had 鈥淭hree Monkeys Swinging in the Tree – teasing Mr crocodile, 听you cant catch me.鈥 Along with some great bouncing and following instructions on rebound
We had a great World Book Day exploring the sensory stories, reading stories together and acting out some of the stories with the puppets
Once again a fun-packed week in Early Years
UNICEF Award update with Rebecca
Since we gained the Bronze level of this award, Rebecca & the teams are already working on the next level. We particularly like this one because it puts the voice of the child at its centre. Let鈥檚 hear what鈥檚 been happening
This week we have a focus on Article 7 of the UN Rights of the Child
UNCRC Article 7: I have a right to a name and to belong to a country
As part of this Governments should make sure that children have a legally registered name and a nationality and as part of this children have the right to know who their parents are
Knowing your parents
Article 7 recognises that not all children and young people can know who their parents are, as
- it may be impossible to identify who a parent is
- a child鈥檚 mother may have refused to identify who their father is
- The term parents can also refer to adopted parents where the biological parents are not known
Being cared for by your parents
Article 7 of the UNCRC is intended to be read alongside Article 5, which talks in more detail about how parents, guardians or family should care for a child or young person.听Like Article 5 , it accepts that there are some cases where children and young people should not be cared for by their parents.听 In these cases it is up to governments to give the best care that they can to ensure that children grow up knowing who they are and who they want to be
This half term we will be working with classes on Class Charters, thinking about which rights are most important to them throughout the different stages of school, and we will have a focus on rights within PSHE sessions
Assembly of the Week with Beth!
听
Beth is doing the LSTE Department鈥檚 assemblies this half term. Let鈥檚 hear about them from Beth
The LSTE Department鈥檚 assembly is about Nature this half term. It is based on the story Hooray For Hoppy by Tim Hopgood. The book tells the story of a rabbit searching for signs of Spring
Each week every pupil is also going to add one piece of blossom to the tree so we can watch it grow over the next 6 weeks. In this week鈥檚 assembly we planted cress, and we are going to watch them grow too. We will check on them every Monday afternoon. Look out for a blossom tree getting bigger and our cress growing!
Nat!
Teamwork
This week, our star of the Pathway is Nat from Beth’s class. Nat has done an outstanding job in the spirit of Teamwork. He is our Pathway Student Council Representative, and during the meeting, he volunteered to gather our pathway’s students’ voices regarding new menus and the library. He has been working hard to ensure that students’ voices are heard and all exercise their right to choose. Well done, Nat! STAR!!!
