News, STARS & Valentine鈥檚 Day – from John & the PHS Team! Friday 14th February 2025

Our School Values: Respect, Teamwork & Resilience

Hi everyone

Happy Friday and Happy Valentine鈥檚 Day! It鈥檚 fun to do things like that at school 鈥 not in any inappropriate way of course, but just for fun and because it fits in with our idea of doing things that everyone else in the country is doing. Something like that can also cut across lots of aspects of learning, such as art, writing, craft, music and even food! Scroll down to the end to see some more! Also, our residential trip to Keswick leaves next week 鈥 so all the best to them. It really is a fabulous event for our older students, and it鈥檚 amazing how many of them say when they leave that it was the highlight of their time in the sixth form. And after that it鈥檚 half term, so the year is rolling on!

Don鈥檛 forget the Online Safety and Family Liaison blogs, as well as the rest of the school鈥檚 and company鈥檚 website. But most of all, please do have a lovely weekend, and we鈥檒l welcome your son or daughter back to school next week to have another good week at PHS, just like it鈥檚 been a lovely one this week too. Thanks for your support

All the best

John S

We have 3 Super-Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through our curriculum. The Key Drivers are Communication, Wellbeing and Independence. The Groups are Literacy, Physical Development and Personal Development

Literacy

Becky, our Literacy Lead, leads a team that improve all aspects of literacy, including this year a lot of handwriting and oracy (it鈥檚 OK, she鈥檒l be going into explain all of that) as well as reading, phonics, books and all sorts!

A Big Word!

This week is assessment week for our students following ELS (structured phonics), where we check in to see how they are doing with their phonic learning this half term. It always comes around so quickly, but keeping the assessments quick and relaxed ensures that we can tweak things and catch any issues or misunderstandings. A big thank you to the students working so hard on their reading, and to staff for making it fun!

We’ve also been delivering some staff training sessions on the importance of continuing to teach and practise phonics skills for more confident readers too. Students approaching the end of formal听phonics through ELS can sometimes think that they will never need to ‘do’ phonics again, so it’s always good to remind them that these strategies can be helpful for all of us, regardless how old we are!

We asked staff in our CPD session to read this word:听Micropachycephalosaurus听–听and to have a guess what it means!

We asked staff to reflect on how they attempted to read this word, presuming they didn’t already know it! We asked if they

  • Attempted to ‘sound it out’听
  • Broke it up into chunks that they recognised听
  • Had to say it more than once (whether out-loud or in their head) to make it more fluent or less ‘stilted’?
  • Were able to make a guess as to what the word might mean based on previous knowledge?

These are all things that we encourage our students to do, and without some knowledge of the ‘phonic’ code, they would really struggle to read new words they come across!

Some of our students have learnt to read by sight, which is a very useful skill, but it stops being useful if you get lots of new words you need to learn all at once (like a new science topic or something). Being able to break words into sounds and syllables, and being able to spot patterns between words are all really useful skills听 – and crucial for tackling complicated words you don’t know!

In case you had a go and want to know if you’re right…..

Always a good reminder as we have new staff members join our team, and we hope this may be useful if you have a student at home who is looking forward to ‘finishing’ phonics!

Happy Reading!

Physical Development

Everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects. Steph oversees this and will ensure that an aspect is shared in the blog each week

Nathan is giving us a PE update this week!

There are just a few PE sessions left where we are doing Racket sports

This week in PE there were a number of lower school standout students, really stepping up the level of their individual skills and progressing in Racket sports, and it鈥檚 great to see

Here is Isaac with his PE award certificate

Well done Isaac, and well done to all for all your efforts 馃檪
