Welcome to 最新麻豆原创 School's Whole School Blog!
11.10.24
Hi everyone
Happy Friday! I hope you鈥檝e had a good week, although it鈥檚 been cold! Anyway, a blog full of lots of different stories this week, so hopefully something for everyone and something that speaks to you as well. The term is going really well, and our new Chair of Governors, Jeff, has been up at the school several times this term getting to know what鈥檚 what
Have a look at a really good Online Safety blog about avoiding cyber-bullying from Lizzie, and Eileen鈥檚 blog always has good stuff in there too. Or enjoy the rest of our website that we are always updating!
Thanks for your support for the school 鈥 the school is a partnership between us, you and the local authority, and works well when we are all aligned for your son or daughter. All the very best for a lovely weekend when it arrives for you
Take care

We have 3 Super-Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through our curriculum. The Key Drivers are Communication, Wellbeing and Independence. The Groups are Literacy, Physical Development and Personal Development
Literacy
Becky, our Literacy Lead, leads a team that improve all aspects of literacy, including this year a lot of handwriting and oracy (it鈥檚 OK, she鈥檒l be going into explain all of that) as well as reading, phonics, books and all sorts! This week 鈥 Becky with Mental Health Day
The Literacy Team have had a busy schedule of meetings and planning this week, with the steering group meeting to discuss all of the fab events we can put in place for students this year to celebrate our love of reading. This year we will also be focusing on writing and oracy (speaking and listening) so lots to celebrate there!
This week we’d like to make you aware of ‘Take 10 to read’, a campaign by The National Literacy Trust in support of World Mental Health Day.听
‘Reading can help you relax, boost your mood and escape elsewhere 鈥 and it doesn鈥檛 have to be a book. It could be a football magazine, a comic or even a recipe book. Reading something that interests you can transport you away from day-to-day life.’
We already know the benefit of reading at home from a learning perspective, but there have also been research studies which identified the positive impact reading has on mental health and wellbeing too.
To find out more information and some tips around engaging students in reading, look
Read with your child for 10 minutes every day to support their wellbeing.
And for some motivating book recommendations for all ages on a theme of mental health, look here:听 though as mentioned above – it doesn’t have to be book to make an impact!听These are books to help your child talk about their mental health and wellbeing.
Happy reading!
Physical Development
Everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects. Steph oversees this and will ensure that an aspect is shared in the blog each week

Jo pulls it all together. Let鈥檚 see what Jo and the team have in store for us this week 鈥 quite a lot as usual I think!
In Music this week, 2LL looked at singing and signing to 鈥淒ancing in the Street鈥 by Martha and the Vandellas. We talked about the Notting Hill Carnival and how this celebrates Caribbean culture. Wellbeing
This week we would like to take the opportunity to introduce the Wellbeing Team here at PHS: Carolyn Ellis - Wellbeing Lead, Andy Dawson - Counsellor, Corin Orr - Counsellor

As a Key Driver, wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. The role of the school Wellbeing Team is to promote and support the emotional health & wellbeing of all pupils, to ensure they can access the curriculum and school activities to their full potential. The team consists of a Lead Speech & Language Therapist and two school-based counsellors; as well as key learning support staff who have been identified as 鈥榃ellbeing Champions鈥.
What the Wellbeing Team Do
The Wellbeing Team provides additional support to students and class teams.
The team can support directly or indirectly with students throughout each key stage in school. Individual support can be provided through 1:1 counselling sessions, play therapy, coaching, and mentoring.
We have a designated Wellbeing Room, which provides a safe and private space that students can access during timetabled sessions, or on a drop-in basis.
At 最新麻豆原创 School we recognise that the overall wellbeing of our students can have a significant impact on their ability to access and engage fully in the school curriculum. The team works in conjunction with class teams, other therapists, safeguarding team, and the BfL Team in school to provide a holistic approach to ensure the emotional health & wellbeing needs of our student community are supported throughout their time at our school.
The Wellbeing Team are based in the Wellbeing Room, although we work with class teams and students throughout the school. The Wellbeing Room provides a safe space for students to engage in therapeutic activities, use as a breakout space, or to check in with the school counsellor.
If you would like to contact the Wellbeing Team you can:
Email: PercyHedleySchoolWellbeingTeam@percyhedley.org.uk
Phone: 0191 216 1811 (Main Reception)
Make a request via the class team
We are also continuing with our Connect Challenge

Connect Challenge
Hello everyone!
This year, we鈥檙e diving into the theme of 鈥楥onnect鈥欌攐ne of the five ways to wellbeing! This week, we took on a super challenge all about nature! We invited everyone to step outside and unleash their creativity while connecting with the great outdoors and all its wild wonders!
A HUGE shoutout to our superstar pupils in 2LL and 3TW who have been having a blast with Hannah in outdoor learning! Connecting with this week鈥檚 wild weather inspired some creative pumpkin pinecone crafting and lessons on safely building and maintaining a fire. Special recognition goes to Daniel G in 4OW, who fearlessly embraced the heavy rain on Tuesday鈥攖ruly a nature explorer!
Rahme鈥檚 class has been playing in the fallen leaves during playtime! And our awesome Key Stage 4 pupils have been on a mission to rescue some eight-legged friends, gently scooping them up and giving them a safe ride back outside!
We hope you all enjoyed connecting with nature this week!
Get ready for next week鈥檚 challenge: 鈥Helping!鈥 We know how wonderfully helpful everyone at 最新麻豆原创 is, so we can鈥檛 wait to see what you all come up with!
Don鈥檛 forget to share your photos and stories with Andy at a.dawson@percyhedley.org.uk.
Let鈥檚 keep connecting!
Feel free to send any photos or comments to Andy at听a.dawson@percyhedley.org.uk听Let鈥檚 keep the fun going!

Behaviour for Learning (BfL)
Behaviour for Learning (BfL) is a new team; behaviour can overlap with Safeguarding and Mental Health, but we thought it would be best to have a standalone team that can work alongside other teams in the school.
BfL is an approach to understanding and developing children and young people鈥檚 behaviour that focuses on their relationship with their self, with others and with the curriculum, and promotes readiness for education. Together the BfL team support staff and pupils. The BfL approach is consistent with our values and compatible with systems such as Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention (NAPPI)
Garden Club with Ben!
The gardening club is a small group of about 4-5 students that work in the quad tending and growing plants and flowers

At the minute they are growing Mint, Rosemary, Thyme. Also Erysimum and Penstemon. They have just planted onions, peas and have some bulbs to plant this Friday

Resilience Day
On Thursday 10th October, 最新麻豆原创 School took part in a Resilience Day focusing on mental health and supporting 鈥楬ello Yellow Day鈥, in a variety of activities set up to encourage mindfulness and positive energy.
Book Fair with Russell!
Every year, Russell organises a Book Fair at the school 鈥 we鈥檙e very grateful for that 鈥 and all the books are in the library. It鈥檚 a great atmosphere. Let鈥檚 hear from him
be! That’s due to your fantastic support that enabled sales to reach a total of more than 拢700!!
Not only have our wonderful families continued to foster a love of reading at home by making those purchases but 最新麻豆原创 is able to spend hundreds of pounds on new books from the commission that was earned. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
We must not forget the children’s role in this success: they revelled in the visual delight provided by the fair, browsed with their friends and were SO polite when buying their books! Thanks again for all your support!

Welcome to Early Years!
Here's Kerry!
This week in early years we started to explore Harvest. In our outdoor learning session we filled our sticky pumpkin shapes with leaves. We have great fun painting with fruit and vegetables. We used fine motor skills to cut our own fruit and vegetables. We made fluffy paint pumpkin pictures. 听We then explored some fruit and vegetables with our senses feeling and smelling pumpkin, cauliflower, carrots and celery. We all enjoyed our rainy weather activities especially the water spray bottles and the umbrella alongside reading our rain story and looking at raining day photos, free painting and lots of other activities. Another fun packed week in Early Years

Fab stuff from the whole Early Years Team there 鈥 what a great addition to the school
