Following the Christmas holidays, many children will have received new or updated devices. While the internet is a wonderful resource for learning and entertainment, it’s important to ensure that our children are safe while they explore the digital world. Here’s a guide to help you ensure online safety for your children.

I am often asked for support or guidance on applications for Disability Living Allowance; DLA or Personal Independence Payment: PIP.聽 I also recently shared information on Universal Credit, Limited Capacity for Work Related Activity, UC, LCWRA which is the replacement benefit for Employment and Support Allowance: ESA.

I am aware of a group called Benefits and Work, which offers online training for claimants, carers, and professionals. Their success rate is high, and it may be worth investing in one or all of their courses. Individual ones for claimants/carers of PIP are 拢7.50 and 拢34 for the bundle of 7. The same bundle for professionals is 拢95

Remember too that I can provide support with applications for DLA/PIP. Being prepared is key. Once you receive the application form you normally have 1 month to complete it. Sometimes extensions are agreed but don鈥檛 depend on it. Once you either make a call to request DLA/PIP or you receive a letter from DWP for transfer from DLA to PIP start gathering evidence.

Don鈥檛 shoot the messenger; this one is well aware of the challenges facing families who require support and struggle to get it. Your child may not meet their criteria, you may have support agreed but not be able to get that support for different reasons. Here鈥檚 a bit about Healthwatch:

Across England, there are 152 local Healthwatch services. Their statutory role includes聽to finding out what communities want from health and social care and providing聽people聽with information and advice about local services.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) fund our work. DHSC gives money to local councils so they can commission an effective local Healthwatch service.

This money is essential to ensuring local Healthwatch have the resources they need to run a high-quality service for their community.

To enable the Government to track what is happening to its investment, we ask local Healthwatch every year how much funding they expect to receive and publish this information.

鈥淲e are holding a SEND Roadshow at Gosforth Library next Thursday 鈥� apologies for short notice 鈥� change of date & venue at the last minute!

There will be around 14 agencies attending from parental support to SEND Friendly activity providers across the North East, plus online advice providers etc.鈥�

This is the North Locality so mainly those living in and around Newcastle.

Skills for People and Collaborative Newcastle are hosting another event, and we would love for you to join us!

We鈥檒l be looking back on important topics from previous events, including:

• Staying Safe

This will help inform the Newcastle Learning Disability plan and guide us in improving the lives of people with a learning disability and their families.

This event is for people with a learning disability, family carers and people who work in health and social care.

Lunch will be provided!

• SEND Activity Sessions for 8-19 years
• SEND Stay & Play Sessions for 0-5 years

We paid for additional resources for the MOVE event. We also paid for Christmas parties which were held on the last day of term. Expenditure was in the region of 拢1000. On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank Chris Fewster Smith for her kind donation for the Christmas parties.

Our AGM is fast approaching, and we would love to have more parents/carers involved. I often say that it isn鈥檛 just about fund-raising although without it we would not be able to do all that we do. I hope that you feel we make a difference. There are opportunities to volunteer too, as the Christmas linked preparation showed. With teachers on the committee who can鈥檛 fulfil these roles it is something I take on and I love working with parents. If you鈥檇 like to chat about FoPHS and how you could help, please get in touch.
